INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
FOR TEENS
Individual Therapy for Teens
(Ages 13-17)
“Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.”
— Gever Tulley
Your teenager is different than the child you once knew.
You notice changes in your child. Maybe they have been isolating in their room, acting moody or irrational, or not engaging in activities they once enjoyed. They seem distant.
You know something is going on and you have tried talking to them. But you typically get an, “I’m fine” response and a door shut in your face.
Your child used to tell you everything. But now, your child shuts you out and you're left wondering when they will let you back in. You’re frustrated, worried, and just not sure what to do.
Don’t wait for things to get worse. Seek help now!
Individual therapy can help your child to work through their emotions, feel more empowered, and build confidence.
Trust & the therapeutic relationship.
You may be wondering, if my child won’t talk to me, why would they open up to a complete stranger?
Developing trust with your teenager is an essential part of the therapy process. It’s not enough for you to trust me (although I hope we build that trust), I need to gain your teen’s trust. It’s important that they feel safe in the environment that I create.
I do that, by meeting them where they are at with patience, understanding, and acceptance. I also discover their strengths, and find out how they naturally express themselves. Through art, music, games, and other creative activities, I give your teen the space to express themselves in a way that feels comfortable for them. And if they just want to talk, that’s okay with me too.
Your child learns that they can be their authentic self, and this helps them to express themselves and begin trusting me to support them.
What are sessions with Lauren like and how will this help my child?
My goal is to create a safe and accepting environment where teens feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and concerns. Every teenager is unique, so sessions will look different for each teen depending on their unique needs.
Based on your teen’s individual needs, I collaborate with them to develop goals that they think are important. I utilize a variety of evidence-based interventions including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, Therapeutic Play Techniques, Sand Tray Therapy, and Mindfulness to help them work through their challenges.
Laughter and humor are also important parts of the therapy process. Yes, we are often addressing serious topics, but teens learn that they can have fun in my office as well.
Your teen will learn healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress, anxiety, depression, or other emotional difficulties they may be experiencing.
I help teens develop a stronger sense of self, build confidence, and cultivate a positive self-image. As well as enhance their communication skills, including active listening, assertiveness, and conflict resolution.
Teens take an active role in the therapy process, which helps them to feel empowered with a sense of agency over their lives.
